Janina Parrot Jacobs

  • 54 years as a professional musician/performer, National Anthem singer, and Director of Music at churches in Michigan, where sometimes -  while doing music for funerals – I realize there are far more important things in life than bad golf shots.

  • 41 years as an owner of a legendary Detroit restaurant ‘Capers Steak by the Ounce’.  Here is where you learn pretty much everything about life: people, customers, employees, persistence, hard work and managing expenses and income…and also that extensive courses in learning how to cook, bake and bartending are nice, but do not teach you at all what running a restaurant is truly like.

  • Advocacy on many fronts: Advisor to the Michigan Women’s Golf Association; Governor - Golf Association of Michigan; Director-at-Large - Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars; Board Member-  Michigan Freedom Centers Military Lounges; Member – Selfridge Air National Guard Base Community Council;  Mentor – PGA HOPE Program; Mentor - Special Olympics of Michigan; Youth On Course: completed back-to-back 100 Hole Hikes, raising over $7,000; Chairperson of dozens of golf outings to benefit charitable causes.

  • Civilian Liaison to Military and Veterans Organizations: Navy and Sea Services Ball Chairperson; President of the Metropolitan Detroit Council of the Navy League of the U.S.; Special Events Chair of Navy Fleet Weeks, War of 1812 – 2012 Bicentennial Celebration, and the Commissioning of USS Detroit; SANGB Base Community Council;

  • Golf Accomplishments: Qualified for 18 USGA National Championships; Michigan Women’s State Amateur, two-time Runner-Up; Winner of dozens of local, regional, national and international tournaments; First woman to play on Men’s golf teams in both high school and college in Michigan, post Title IX; First woman to serve on Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Courses Evaluations panel; first woman golfer to be featured on the cover of ClubCorp’s (now, Invited) Private Clubs Magazine.

  • Awards: Inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Michigan Women’s Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2017; awarded the Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award by the Michigan Golf Course Association in 2021;

Yes, all of this makes for very busy days, 7 days a week. While I have the energy and motivation to do it all, I’ll continue – also finding time for daily walks ranging from 4-7 miles (where I do my best thinking)…..plus I still walk and carry my bag playing golf.

And now, publishing Golf She Plays? Why take on yet another task at this stage in life?

Because I can and because it is needed. But you already know why: Accept Every Invitation.

Anyone reading any of my Bios will see I’ve lived a varied and interesting life which is actually the result of two converging ideas: 1) the mantra I follow called Accept Every Invitation; and 2) still figuring out what I’ll be when I grow up, amazed at what I continue to learn. Instead of working most jobs and leaving, I simply keep piling them on.

Mixing business with fun and doing what you want is never truly considered work. I’ve never stopped growing but have also figured out that you are not solely your formal education or resume. Yes, I’m a college grad, in Communications - Radio/Television/Film/Journalism at Detroit’s Wayne State University (WSU) - but my real education evolved from much deeper wells:

  • Four years as a sales rep for Jockey International where I discovered that, for women, your boss will refuse to understand what benefits your golf skills can bring to your work;

  • Over 40 years in media:  first as an architectural golf and travel writer but also specializing in women’s, juniors, business, and advocacy issues; hosting an hour-long radio show ‘GolfWrap’ on WJR-AM-760 for 5 years and then a golf TV show, ‘Michigan Golf Weekly’ on CBS-Detroit, for 4 years. Sandwiched in between was a 4-year stint as a columnist for the Detroit Free Press.  I’ve seen firsthand what golfers within different demographics face, and now am trying to put that knowledge to work.

Managing Editor

Tom Lang

    Tom has spent most of his career covering the sport of golf, including as a freelance writer at the Detroit Free Press for more than 3 decades. Simultaneously he worked in the industry promoting golf, and most recently, his full time work the past 10 years has been as publisher of MI Golf Journal magazine (www.migolfjournal.com ) in Michigan.

    In all these roles Tom has been proud to support women in golf. His experiences include PR duties with the Meijer LPGA Classic and the Ford Senior Players Championship. His work at the Detroit Free Press (1994-2025) ranged from covering youth golf events for boys and girls all the way up to the U.S. hosting the Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills in 2002 – and every level of golf along the way.

    “I am a man who made sure my own daughter learned the game of golf, and I support more women taking up the game. It’s a sport that is perfect for all ages and families – and with moms at the heart of most families, ladies playing more often and being welcomed at courses everywhere is an optimal goal that I want to support in this role.”
